Achieving your goals with the power of visualisationNew Year's resolutions are a common tradition, but they often set us up for failure. We make grand promises to ourselves, only to find that our motivation wanes and we struggle to stick to our goals. This year, instead of making resolutions, try making plans.
Plans are different from resolutions in that they are more concrete and actionable. Rather than just saying that you want to exercise more or eat healthier, create a plan that outlines specific steps you will take to achieve those goals. For example, you might plan to go to the gym three times a week, or to prepare healthy meals on Sunday evenings for the week ahead. Another advantage of making plans instead of resolutions is that they are more adaptable. Life doesn't always go according to plan, and that's okay. With a resolution, it can be easy to feel like you've failed if you don't stick to it perfectly. But with a plan, you can adjust and make changes as needed. If you can't make it to the gym one week, for example, you can simply adjust your plan and go the following week instead. So this year, forget about traditional New Year's resolutions. Instead, focus on setting some goals, and it doesn’t matter how small they are, and then making achievable plans that will help you achieve those goals. You'll be more likely to succeed, and even if you don't, you'll have the flexibility to make adjustments and keep moving forward. Personally I find that visualisation is a powerful technique for setting and achieving goals. If you can see it you can believe it! By visualising your desired outcome, you can get a clearer sense of what you want and how to get there. Here are some steps for using visualisation to set goals:
